Knowledge, attitude and perceived vulnerability of baccalaureate nursing students and nurses to patient with HIV/AIDS


Abstract
Given the gloval impact of the AIDS pandemic, it is necessary to take every measure to prevent an epidemic of this disease in Korea. The most effective strategy is prevention. Health care givers, especially nurses, have the primary responsibility of AIDS prevention and providing comfort care of those patient with HIV \ AIDS. In spite o f this responsibility, many nurses are afraid of AIDS patients and refuse to care the patient with HIV \ AIDS because they have a fear and anxiety of HIV infection from AIDS patient at worksite.
The purpose of this descriptive study was (1) to examine nurses¢¥ and baccalaureate nursing students¢¥ knowledge , attitude and perceived vulnerability to AIDS patient,(2) to examine differnce between nurses¢¥ and baccalaureate nursing students¢¥ knowledge, attitude and perceived vulnerability to AIDS patient and (3)to identify demographic variables influencing knowledge, attitude and perceived vulnerability to AIDS patient.
The subject of this study was 142 baccalaureate nursing students and 301 nurses. The data were collected with a qestionnaire based an Wert¢¥s instrument of perceived vulnerability to AIDS patient.
The findings of this study can be summarized as follows.
1. Knowledge of AIDS
¨ç knowledge of transmission routes :
the mean score was estimated to be 11.3 of 20.
¨è knowledge of term :
the mean score was estimated to be 0.87 of 1.
¨é knowledge of the prevent measures :
the mean score was estimated to be 12 of 20.
¨ê Total knowledge of AIDS :
the mean score was estimated to be 24.01 of 41.
2. Attitude of AIDS.
¨ç morally offended attitude ;
the mean score was estimated to be 1.76 of 3.
¨è positive / negative attitude ;
the mean score was estimated to be 2.13 of 3.
¨é differnt attitude type ; The most number of nurse¢¥s group treated AIDS patient as a terminally ill patient and the middle number of nurse¢¥s group treated AIDS patient as a STD patient. The less number of nurse¢¥s group treated AIDS patient as a B?type hepatitis patient.
3. Perceived vulnerability
The mean score of perceived vulnerability to AIDS was estimated to be 2.8 of 4. Respondents had a few profession) capacity to care the AIDS patient and had a few knowledge of prevent acquition of HIV infection from AIDS patient at worksite.
4. Correlation among knowledge , attitude and perceived vulnerability to AIDS patient. The correation between knowledge and attitude was significant(p<.01).
Concludely, it is suggested that preventive training programmes include knowledge and experiential learning to address fear, disconfort and anxiety about HIV / AIDS.
